Perodua handover 12 Myvi to local institutions of higher learning for Perodua Eco-Challenge Race

Rawang, March 30 - Perodua today handed over 12 units of 1.3 litre Myvi worth some RM480,000 to 12 local institutions of higher learning taking part in the Perodua Eco-Challenge, which will be held at the Speedway Plus Circuit, Subang on 21 June 2009.

Each of the participating institutions of higher learning received an unregistered Perodua Myvi for their students to “re-engineer’ the car to improve the fuel efficiency. Perodua also gave each institutions RM10,000 for the project.

Invitations were sent to 21 universities and polytechnics throughout the country in January to send in project proposals for the Perodua Eco-Challenge.

Out of 16 responses received, 12 were shortlisted.

They are Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Industri Selangor (Unisel).

The others are Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM).

Perodua Managing Director Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said: “We want to challenge the students’ engineering capabilities and at the same time spur the development of new technologies”

“More importantly, we want to promote the good driving habits among the Malaysian public,” he said at the handing over ceremony of the vehicles to representatives of the institutions of higher learning at the Perodua headquarters in Rawang today.

The winning teams will be decided by the distance their “re-engineered” car covers with a given amount of fuel. Points will also be given to teams based on their creativity in the modification of the cars, decorations as well as support from their fellow students, Syed Hafiz said.

The 12 units of Myvi included four units of Myvi SE (two units manual and two units auto transmission), four units of Myvi Premium (two units manual and two units auto transmission) and four units of Myvi Standard (two units manual and two units auto transmission).

The cars were allocated to the institutions by a random balloting process witnessed by their representatives.

Also present at the ceremony were principals and representatives from eight secondary schools from the Hulu Selangor district.
