Five tips to save petrol when driving a car

In life, there are only two ways for you to be better off financially:

  • The first is to earn more.
  • The second is to make the most of what you have.

While it would be wonderful to be able to do both, it is just not practical. So, we are here to share with you at least a few tricks to help with the second method, which is to make the most with what you have by way of saving fuel.

In this article, we will be sharing some fuel savings tips that can save you a few trips to the petrol pump," but it will require some changes in your habits.

Here are five tips to save petrol for your car:

  1. Do not drive aggressively

Sudden accelerations use up more fuel. A good way to avoid having to step on the accelerator at the traffic light is to pay attention to when your light is about to go green, or better yet, when the opposing light is turning yellow.

  1. Monitor tyre pressure

While air (generally) does not cost money, not enough air in your tyres will make driving more expensive. Fill your tyres with air every three weeks to make sure that your wallet can breathe easier and most importantly, you can maximise your Perodua car’s performance.

  1. Follow service maintenance schedule

We understand that bringing your car to be serviced can be time consuming, but it is time (and money) well spent.

  • Your friendly service advisor/mechanic can help identify problems before they happen.
  • Have your oil changed according to the maintenance schedule.
  • Having your oil changed every now and then will ensure that your engine remains clean.
  • A clean engine helps provide adequate lubrication for the moving parts in your engine, which translates to better fuel economy.

If you are driving a Perodua car, you can check your maintenance schedule.

  1. Heat management

We all know that Malaysia is a very hot country and air conditioners in cars are a must. However, heavy consumption of air conditioners in the vehicle would also impact your petrol usage.

  • As a driver, you may consider winding down the window first to cool off your car before turning on the air conditioner whenever possible.
  • The air conditioner system consumes more energy the hotter it is inside the car.
  • To help reduce natural buildup of heat inside your car, try parking under shade more frequently.
  • It is also a good idea to have your windows tinted so that you can reduce the heat inside your car.

Taking these steps would help in improving fuel efficiency for all types of cars.

  1. Plan your journey

This is where you need to think ahead by asking yourself what you need to buy and do your grocery shopping at most only once a week. Plan your activities with friends and families beforehand and carpool.

  • Be considerate, chip in for fuel and change drivers if you want to go on a long road trip.
  • An adventure is only great if you have people to share it with.
